ABSTRACT Very little is known about the manufacturing and use of ancient Egyptian instruments, their discovery very rare. An extensive radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating program has been conducted on 25 musical instruments currently held at Louvre Museum musée du ) Lyon Fine Arts des Beaux-Arts de ). This study includes cordophones (harps, lyres, lutes), membranophones (drums, tambourines), idiophones (clappers, crotales), as well wind (oboe) that have entered museum collections during 19th century or first half 20th century; consequently, original archaeological contexts discoveries are poorly understood. Approximately 50 C dates enable drawing a general overview manufacturing. A wide variety wood material identified, representing both indigenous species imported species. Results indicate native flora Egypt was exclusively used until Third Intermediate Period when imports could be identified. results not always consistent with relative previously thought, mainly based stylistic criteria. They demonstrate these hold well-preserved objects extending over 2500 years, from Second (ca. 1700 BCE) to start Islamic (8th CE). project provides important for knowledge instrument crafts.
